Logistics Update Africa reports that at the recent Perishable Logistics Africa (PLA) event focused on the airfreight sector, discussions were held on the theme of developing Intra-Africa trade for the perishable food supply chain. Collaboration and standards development between African nations were identified as areas of importance towards accessing new markets, and may be seen through a pursuit of sustainable business activities that help reduce freight costs and increase margins. On technology, farmers and other stakeholders were noted as seeing the need to invest in technologies that help minimize errors and support better product forecasting. Blockchain was noted as a key technology being taken up by all sectors that enable data-sharing and enhance supply chain visibility, and which would allow for airports to develop export-focused soft and hard infrastructure.

RWANDA LAUNCHES PHASE-I OF EAST AFRICA’S FIRST-EVER INLAND PORT

According to Logistics Update Africa, United Arab Emirates-based Dubai Ports World has established an $80 million project presence in Rwanda via the launch of an inland port in Kigali. Cited as East Africa's first ever inland port, the first phase of the project features a container yard and two warehouses. The benefits of such a rollout is noted to offer traders a solution to inland logistics problems on delays and costs through a one-stop-shop operation featuring a variety of cargo focused services including application of RFID tags to goods for enhanced visibility and security.

TRAXENS DEVELOPS FIRST STANDARDS FOR SMART CONTAINER DATA EXCHANGE

According to ShipInsight, the French technology company Traxens has led in the development of the first standards for the exchange of standardized messaging for smart container data. Published by the United Nations, ShipInsight reports these new standards offer the basis for development of Application Programming Interface (API) capabilities, allow for integration of technologies as blockchain and big data, and can potentially be helpful in bringing together the broader supply chain.

COLD STORAGE & WAREHOUSES SHOULD BOOST KENYAN POTATO FARMING

FreshPlaza reports that East Africa's largest farm equipment renter, TingA, is set to build cold storage facilities in 25 counties in Kenya with the first groundbreaking planned for Narok. In an effort to help smallholders farmers reduce post-harvest losses and save them from unfair trading brokers, TingA will also offer a variety of assistance including help in access to seeds and providing transportation to move their produce to the cold storage.

FII News reports that India has recognized the growing importance of drone use for commercial and social applications and is taking measures to create a technology platform along with related policy that help enable a safe environment for this industry's growth. According to the article, specific guidelines are to be followed by OEMs/Manufacturers of drones (unmanned Aircraft Systems) so as to comply with drone regulations as No Permission, No Take-off (NPNT) where NPNT is a software program which grants valid permission to operate in India through the DigiSky portal registration system.
